Once the site of a mission that served as a key stop along the Oregon Trail, Whitman Mission National Historic Site has a sad but significant history. Run by Marcus and Narcissa Whitman and housing dozens of white pioneers who lived there, the mission was destroyed by Cayuse Native Americans after many years of growing hostilities and unrest. Today, the site houses a museum that highlights the lifestyles both of the area Native Americans and the mission residents. An outdoor path passes by various ruins from the mission including the foundations of the building and its outbuildings as well as the mass grave where the Whitmans and others were buried together. Located just a few miles west of Walla Walla, the site is close to the Oregon state border in east Washington.
